Southern Farming Systems, which is at the leading edge in agricultural
research, recently held their main field day at the SFS research site,
Hamilton Highway, Inverleigh. This field day drew a large crowd of around
200 people which allowed members and sponsors to view trials and to be
briefed on current cropping and pasture research. Groups were taken
around the site, on a preset route, which allowed researchers an opportunity
to explain their trial’s key findings.
Members were able to compare currently grown varieties against both new and
near to market varieties in wheat, barley, pulses, and canola trials.
These trials also included a comparison of disease resistance by looking at
fungicide treated against untreated plots. Other key areas included disease
and nitrogen management, row spacings in barley, stubble management, soil
health, pulse inoculants, cereal grazing management and also what’s
available in new pasture varieties. Southern Farming Systems
researcher Lou Ferrier demonstrated a Green Seeker crop sensor, which
indicates the nitrogen needs of cereal crops – in other words how green is
green.
After
a BBQ lunch people viewed a soil pit and were given a presentation by senior
soil scientist Mark Imhof on soil structure and how different soils react to
moisture.
Many
of the sponsors of Southern Farming Systems were also available to discuss
their products and equipment on offer.
There
was plenty of new information presented at this field day and should have a
definite spot on every farmers calendar.
