High Rainfall Zone (HRZ) Factsheets - 2010

Optimising management in the High Rainfall Zone

Assisting growers achieve yield potential in the High Rainfall Zone of southern-Australia

The rapid expansion of area to cropping in the High Rainfall Zone (HRZ) of southern Australia provides a different cropping environment to the traditional wheat belt with new and often inexperienced growers entering the industry. In addition, the longer growing season provides greater options to growers, often complicating decision making even for experienced growers. For the yield potential of the HRZ to be realised, growers need to have a good understanding of the potential and risks faced in the HRZ and how their management practices impact on yield and returns in this new cropping environment.

This project is using crop models, soils data and long-term climate data from sites which represent different regions within the HRZ to look at the probability of achieving yield increases and profits under different management strategies. Model outputs are being used to produce a series of fact sheets based on the strategies identified by growers.
