Integrated Weed Management

The continuing development of herbicide resistance in grass weeds in southern Australia threatens the sustainability of conservation farming systems. This project will, in collaboration with farming systems groups, trial and demonstrate, integrated weed management systems with crop rotations, rotations of herbicide groups, and tactics to control seed set of problem weeds, to manage herbicide resistance and sustain conservation farming systems.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate the value and importance of seed set control operations in the long term cropping rotation on the population dynamics of grass weeds.
  • Establish long term trials to screen a range of cover crop species for soil protection and weed suppression.
  • Undertake research with new mode of action herbicides for the control of herbicide resistant weeds in the southern region.
  • Adaptation of RIM for the management of target weeds in the southern region.
  • A random Survey of herbicide resistance status of grass weeds in NE Victoria and Southern NSW.
