Integrated Pest Management for Crops and Pastures

(May 2008) $49.95 from CSIRO Publishing

Paul Horne and Jessica Page have worked together to develop and implement IPM in a wide range of horticultural and broad-acre crops and pastures. Over the last 5 years they have developed an IPM strategy that farmers in southern Victoria are implementing. Together they have developed a course for farmers and agronomists on IPM for pastures and cropping.

Integrated Pest Management for Crops and Pastures describes in straightforward language what is required for farmers to successfully implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in cropping and grazing operations. It explains the differences between conventional pesticide-based controls and IPM, and demonstrates the advantages of IPM.

Cereal Growth Stages - The Link to Crop Management

(September 2005) 38 page full colour booklet, lots of photos and examples

This guide has been produced as part of the GRDC funded project (SFS 00006) examining the role of disease control and canopy management in optimising cereal production in south east Australia. Results are primarily based on information generated in the high rainfall zone in 2003 and 2004, though control sites in the Mallee and Wimmera provided drier environments for comparative data.

Subsoil Constraints to Cropping in the High Rainfall Zone

Department of Primary Industries (DPI)I and the Grains Research Development Corporation (GRDC) funded a scoping study into the subsoil constraints to cropping in the higher rainfall areas of southeast Australia as these areas have potential for increased area of crop and increased yields. Problems associated with poor soil structure and waterlogging have been noted in the past but the extent of these and other constraints in the high rainfall zone (HRZ) are unknown. The study confirms that the major subsoil constraints are physical due to dense clay subsoils. Also, soil acidity, a topsoil constraint, may reach the subsoil if not addressed. Seven high rainfall agro-ecological zones (HRAEZs) are proposed to provide better geographical focus for research and extension in the HRZ. Options for management and research are proposed for HRZ subsoil constraints. The full report to GRDC can be downloaded in sections here.
